Michael Lock (1954-2007) was a man and musician of many, many parts; a bundle of energy and lively, amiable and amusing company. He is greatly and constantly missed by his family and by fellow musicians.
Mike graduated in Music and Maths from York University, and subsequently gained diplomas in Singing and Chinese. Then for many years he was a valued teacher and conductor on the peripatetic instrumental staff of Bedfordshire Education Department. He was a committed teacher and player, much respected by pupils and colleagues alike.
His activities away from teaching were as energetically pursued as was his daily schedule - particularly in the field of singing, which gradually became his favourite musical activity. He was a founder member of the Addison Singers, the Joyful Company of Singers, and later of Concord Singers in Bedford. He was as active outside the County as within it, particularly in the operatic field. He appeared frequently with the White Horse Opera Company in the West Country, where he sang rôles such as Don Giovanni, Marcello in La Bohème, and with the Opera For All Company, John Sorel in The Consul and Moralès in Carmen. He also conducted the Bedford Operatic Society in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, and was a loyal member of Bedford Town Band. Latterly with the Concord Singers he was active in commissioning new choral pieces and the new carols featured on Now may we singen.
